Methodists are one of the "seven sister" mainline Christian churches. Methodists have well-educated ministers, and a liberal theology, believing in salvation by grace and free will, but allowing congregants considerable leeway in the details. They have a strong commitment to religious tolerance, to separation of church and state, to community service, and to social justice.
The denomination was founded by John Wesley. Charles Wesley, his brother, was a prolific hymn writer, so Methodists have a strong musical tradition. PUMC features a real pipe organ, and has often been at the forefront of community religious music programs.
Services are understated, rather than animated. You may feel comfortable in suit and tie, or may prefer to wear a sweater and nice sneakers. The church has taken steps in recent years to make itself handicap-accessible.
Methodists do not claim to offer the exclusive path to salvation; they "play well with others", whether as individuals or as congregations. There are frequent church suppers in the basement, and other regular opportunities for fellowship.
PUMC has one of the oldest buildings, and one of the largest sanctuaries in the area, with inspirational architecture, original art, and exceptional stained-glass windows, making it suitable for large weddings and funerals. A recent upgrade to the facilities offers padded seating and air conditioning. Off-street parking is plentiful.Added September 01, 2016 by A Google User
